Sustainable schools petition

This will just take a minute or two of your time…

Education and sustainability are both investments for the future, yet the
government seems to be ignoring the link between the two.

People and Planet and Friends of the Earth Local Groups’ Youth and Education
Network are working together to press the government to retain the
Sustainable Schools Strategy.

Education Secretary Michael Gove has made it clear in briefings that he
intends to drop Department of Education support for the Sustainable Schools
Strategy. Evidence from the previous education department and numerous other
sources has shown that those schools who implement sustainability have
raised standards as well as contributed to staff and pupils’ wellbeing. And
due to savings on energy bills, reduced waste and efficiency, making schools
more sustainable also has the potential to save more than it costs.

Rachel Gibbons, Co-ordinator of Friends of the Earth Local Groups’ Youth and
Education Network said:

“We recognise the government’s need to save money, but think it is very
shortsighted to withdraw funding from Sustainable Schools. This will lead to
short term savings but will miss the much larger long term savings that
could be made by helping all schools to become sustainable by using less
energy and resources and producing less waste.”

“Not investing in Sustainable Schools is like missing out on a harvest
because you don’t want to spend the money on a packet of seeds.”
