PLANS to provide low carbon heating and power for Leicester will take a huge step forward today (29 June) when work begins on the city’s new District Energy Scheme.  The multi-million pound scheme is a 25-year partnership between Leicester City Council and Cofely District Energy and will be delivered by a new subsidiary called the Leicester District Energy Company. It will provide low carbon heating and energy to around 3,000 homes and a number of council-owned buildings when the first phase of the project is completed in 2012.  Ambitions for extending the project have already moved forward with the University of Leicester now joining the scheme.
