Leics Food Links calls for fairness for Farmer’s Markets

Below is a press release recently put out by our friends at Leicester Food Links about the prohibitive prices they are currently needing to pay to put on Farmers’ Markets in and around Leicester. If you’d like to offer your support, get in touch with Sandra Herbert (contact details below).

BE FAIR TO OUR FARMERS MARKETS

Leicester City council is discriminating against local farmers and producers by charging excessively for the Farmers Market held in Humberstone Gate. This is the conclusion of Leicestershire Food Links who starting operating the monthly market in November 09

Sandra Herbert, chair of LFL, welcomed the first market in the City Centre as it provided a larger more vibrant market selling a larger range of quality, locally produced fresh produce. It replaced the much smaller market trading within the market itself.

“We were very excited that after a number of years of negotiation, the City Council supported a Farmers Market that would do justice to the growing local foods movement. Customers loved it and producers were enjoying the new location.  But since our move from the retail market our costs have increased dramatically as we now have to pay a licence fee of £300 for each market, on top of electricity charges of £175. The Rival Markets policy has to be revised, it is outdated and unfair”

New 10:10 campaign for lighter evenings

For info from the people behind the 10:10 campaign to reduce UK carbon emissions by 10% from 2009 to 2010…

What if we could squeeze an extra hour of sunlight into our days, just by changing the time on our clocks?

Well, last weekend 10:10 launched our brand new plan to do just that: the Lighter Later campaign to move clocks forward by one hour throughout the entire year.

Obviously we can’t make extra daylight just by fiddling with the clocks. But by shifting an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening – when so many more of us are awake to enjoy it – we really can bring more sunshine into our lives.

Leicester Friends of the Earth launch new “Get Serious!” campaign

Campaigning for lower-emission power stations: for action before Feb 23rd

Here’s a request for a simple 5-minute action from the campaigning website 38 degrees….

At the moment, energy companies are due to receive financial support from the government to build new, carbon capture power stations, which burn fossil fuels but pump their emissions underground.  The financial support from the government will continue until the power stations are profitable.

Despite this financial aid, energy companies are under no pressure to make sure that the power stations actually work in making big reductions in carbon emissions.  Some MPs are calling for an addition to the Energy Bill to make sure that energy companies are required to work to lower carbon emissions.

We are asking people to write to their MP and ask them to support an Emissions Performance Standard when the Energy Bill is debated this month.

I wondered if you would be prepared to let your members know about the campaign – the link to the campaign page is http://www.38degrees.org.uk/cleaner-energy-bill and we can easily supply text for a newsletter if that makes things more straight forward.  The debate is on 24th February so for the campaign to be successful action needs to be taken before 23rd February.
