Waste Action volunteers for Leicestershire being recruited now!

News of an exciting new scheme being organised by Leicestershire county council. Note that the deadline for applications is March 28th 2011..

We are looking to recruit and train 20 people to become Waste Action Volunteers – experts who help residents reduce the amount of rubbish they send to landfill.

In Leicestershire, every two weeks, we throw away enough waste to fill the Albert Hall; we need your help to reduce this.

Why get involved:
• Learn new skills and gain experience to add to your CV
• Meet new people and make new friends
• Get involved in your local area
• Help local people save money
• Opportunity to gain work experience in waste and environmental topics

Activities you could get involved in as a Waste Action Volunteer:
• Organising competitions, workshops or talks
• Setting up an information stall at your local library or community centre
• Writing blogs
• Setting up events such as a clothes swap or real nappy party

You will also have the opportunity to showcase your current talents, be it writing articles for local newsletters or newspapers, giving talks to community, youth or school groups, or attending local events to talk to residents face to face.

We have already recruited 68 volunteer Master Composters who have collectively spent over 2,000 hours spreading the home composting message.

In return for your time you will receive
• Support from our volunteer co-ordinator
• All mileage expenses relating to your volunteering paid
• A free two day training course to get you started (Saturday 7th and 21st May)
• The option to complete additional e-learning training modules
• Access to a wide range of resources free for you to borrow

The initial training course will focus on Home Composting, Love Food Hate Waste (a National campaign to help reduce food waste) and Food Waste Digesters.

Additional e-learning modules will be available in areas such as Real Nappies, Reuse and Packaging if you are interested in expanding your knowledge further.
As a Waste Action Volunteer you will be asked to complete 30 hours of volunteering in the first year. The course is open to all Leicestershire residents (excluding Leicester City) aged 18 and over.
